The only comparison that matters is Sam Tomkins compared to Tim Smith. Sam is the better of those two and therefore improves the team from what it was when he came into the team.
Some people (particularly the media) will always look to compare a young player to someone who played their position with distinction in the past. Let them do it but don't let it bother you. I doubt it will bother Sam.

He clearly can't mate, I remember well.
I don't want to compare the two in terms of ability, as I don't think there's a direct comparison yet - when Edwards was 20 he was surrounded by some fantastic players.
In terms of impact on the team in their first season, then I think Sam has had more, but then again he's 20 in his first season Shaun wasn't.
Not quite so straight forward at all. One thing I do think they have in common though is their desire to win, and their frustration when mistakes are made.
Shaun at the hight of his powers was without a doubt a better player than Sam currently is, Shaun in his first season? ...... lets see Sam develop and then we might be able to make a more fair comparison. |
