| Quote cod'ead="cod'ead"Another of his acts of bravado occurred in a semi against the old enemy. IIRC Ronnic Campbell was the referee and we'd been awarded a penalty, about 10 metres (or yards in old money) in from touch and about 40 metres from the goal line. Ron took the ball up to the spot and pointed at the sticks. He then took a tap and ran. All the rovers players had turned their backs as soon as Ron pointed. What they didn't realise was that he'd pointed at the sticks and said to Cambell "we're taking a tap".
Back in the days, you didn't deserve either a No. 9 or a No. 7 shirt unless you were a leary little 2@'"
Excellent comment. Shame the HDM "journalists" couldn't be bothered to research the MAN and the PLAYER, rather than someone else's glass jaw.
Ronnie would have been a wow in SL, as hookers don't have to win the ball these days. If at a sad time I coould say that Ronnie's strengths were in the loose rather than as an out-and-out scrummager.
23 tries in 87 appearances is damned good strike rate for any hooker.

| I have today emailed James Smailes with this :
=blueHi James
I just wanted to register my disappointment at the lack of journalistic research in the article on Ronnie Wileman.
When the only comment that can be made is about an injury to another player I feel it is a slur on the integrity of Ronnie.
I have taken the opportunity to post a few FACTS about the player in the comments section, which I feel could have given a more balanced appraisal about Ronnie's career. These took me about five minutes to research and I find it disappointing that no-one at the HDM did the same.
Sorry, I don't know if it was you or someone else who penned this piece, so I am at least not prejudiced.
Yours in sport
etc

| The trade press usually do good obituaries, so perhaps we will see them tomorrow.

I think Roger got over it - didn't he say "I think I stayed in one place too long" or something like that? I'm not condoning it by any means but I think Ronnie did rather more good things in his career than that one bad thing.

How awful that Ronnie Wileman is remembered for one incident against our near neighbours - lots of sportsmen have moments when shall we say they should not have done that - I am sure even this weekend we have seen Rugby players (Union and League) and footballers on sky sports were players have beeen lucky to escape without having a serious injury, It happens -
I have met Roger Millward over the years since his retirement and I am sure that he does not think of the moment Ron Wileman hit him . HKR supporters are boring in there thinking ,it is almost as if they forget all the good times that Roger gave them.

I remember that, I laughed like when he did it, because I didn't understand [iwhat[/i he had done and what he said, quite a few followed his lead regularly till the penny dropped.

Without looking back at any replays, I still believe Phil Lowe was complicit in that incident by way of him being in the way of either Millward or Wileman, memories are a bit foggy now.

And still the pathetic pis*ing contest continues
Get over it, this isn't about Millwards jaw it's about Ronnie Wileman passing away.

| Just got back from holiday and seen the news: One of my greatest memories of Ronnie was [ithat[/i tackle on the Widnes prop (Hogan?) effectively saving the day in the 1980 semi final at Swinton. Everyone gave chase and he nailed him inches short of the line.
RIP Ronnie.
