Amos Roberts became the best fullback at Wigan when he put pen to paper and IMO, should be starting there on Sunday.



Regardless of how nice Mathers is, how long he was out injured, how poor a defensive line he has been working behind etc, we need the best man available for the job. It's not personal, it is professional sport and there is no room for sentimentality.



If we signed Roy Asotasi and Brent Kite tomorrow then how many games would Fielden start? It doesn't mean he's done anything wrong but you want the best players in your squad in the place where they can have the best impact on your team.

roberts can be no where near match fit he hasnt played a game in how many months, but yet everyone wants mathers whos played 3 pre season games to miss out

so what should we save roberts for then? how is he gonna get match fit if we dont play him

Mathers will go at FB this season. He didn't look that bad at Leigh.

What was comical was Tim Smith catching the kick off and looking for Fielden. Now that was funny!

Neither player seemed to know where the other one was or where they were supposed to be. That doesn't make them bad players. That's what trial matches are for!

If that happen v Wakey then it won't be funny!

As for Mathers, he went ok for me but so many were just ok. Can't take the conditions out of it either. It was just so cold!

Tommy was the stand out player and was rightfully named MOM.

As I have said all along Mathers will get his chance...first 10 games or so...



I saw an improvement in him towards the end of last season and I think he deserves a chance. Wigan have invested alot of time and little money into Mathers if we gave up on him now it would be wasted.



Ok he did not score many tries last year but that was not all his fault our attack as a team was woeful at times.

I have never been a fan. For me he is another to add to the lists of "Why on earth did Wigan sign him".

His defensive play is aweful, looks scared to me. Normally if a fullback is poor defensively, you can excuse it a little if they are good in attack, but 2 tries last year shows how much he offers in attack. He doesn't chime into the line very well and harly ever beats the 1st man.



Shouldnt be in our team as he is a liability, wish we had a few more who were as vocal as him on the pitch, but this isnt enough of an asset to warrant him being picked week in week out.

it takes much longer than your giving him to get back from the injuries he's had!! he was probably about 18 months away from been fully back from his first injury when he did his other knee at the titans, so i think next season or the season after is when mathers will be looking at his very best again.



truley judge him then! as a fan i can understand why that may be unrealistic, but it also shows how desperate or how badley the club was been run at the time when you signed him
