| No doubt sam is a good player regardless of if you like him or not but 300k is a large wedge of cap space for one player

It would appear he is taking up very little, if any of it.'"
so you think £300k per year is very little when the rest of the players have to share out the remaining £1.4 million?

| But isn't this the whole point of the amendment to the salary cap rules?
IE: to make extra allowances for certain players which frees up salary cap funds which in turn can be used to pay top players to keep them in SL. So Wigan can now pay S. Tomkins what he is worth and still keep within the cap.

Think it creates a unfair competition and undermines somewhat the cap. We will be ok, as we also have a few players who would fit but other teams will be at a dis advantage?

yes and i agree but i still think £300k per year is a lot of money to give one player, not knocking him for getting it at all fair play to him, i'm just thinking i'm glad our club isn't run like that, wigan would love to go back to the days when they bought all their trophies, but the long term was that they lost their home.

| Quote The Guardian="The Guardian"the junior one has accepted an upgraded deal with Wigan thought to be worth around £300,000 a year and which will allow the Rugby Football League to promote him as the face of British rugby league ahead of the 2013 World Cup.'"
Anyone have a high quality version of his embrace of Charnley during the recent Challenge Cup Final?
Meanwhile this apparently is going to be the face to represent RL in the UK:
and people still claim the RFL are clueless when it comes to marketing the game.

| Quote Gotcha="Gotcha"I don't believe for one single minute that =#FF0000any union club would touch Sam Tomkins, or were ever in for him. And personally I think that's why he agreed a new deal at Wigan.
I don't want to be snobby because it's one of the many reasons I can not abide by the union game. But I can't deny that in union they have a certain "hooray" class about them. I can't recall anybody of such a low life personality ever playing in the union game. '"
Plenty of bad lads from the inner city (well, town) playing it around here.

Any move to keep our stars in SL should be given a chance. Tomkins is without doubt a huge talent and therefore hot property. If this new rule allowed us to sign Sonny Bill what would you say then?

| I think we need to understand how this "exemption" works a bit more.
As it stands now, all it seems to do is allow a club to pay one player or a category of players more money.
Is every SL club now faced with a handful of players demanding to be the "exception player" and get their salary doubled?

| This.
As Richie says more details are required before working through the positives and any negatives (including unintended ones.)
__________
If it transpires the RFL are paying some or all of this contract perhaps they should be placing Tomkins in the re-branded London Broncos side where his presence may actual make a difference to the profile of the sport amongst the southern based/biased media?

Do you really think sam tomkins 300k is coming off a 1.7m cap?
The cap has been altered...... we dont know to what extent yet.
I wouldn't be surprised if he was totally exempt from the cap now.... best case 50%
