Of the junior success stories this season, Gary Wheeler is probably pick of the bunch. In a year expected to herald the real arrival of Kyle Eastmond, Wheeler snook in under the radar and has wowed us all.
"Great, innit?"
Wheeler's progress in the first team has seen him play across the park. Starting on the wing, spelling in the centres, and a highly impressive game in his "natural" position of stand off at Wakefield.
What has been more impressive is his attitude. Wherever, and whenever called upon, he has gone on to the field, and played the game properly, showing a good rugby brain, and that he isn't afraid to try something different to unlock a defence. As sort of controlled self-assurance.
So the circle of life turns. Sean Long WILL leave Saints after 12 years, signing a two year deal for Hull FC. While you can't help but accept it is right for both Saints and Longy, the thought of him in black and white hoops is like the thought of walking in on your girlfriend getting nailed by the Hamburglar. But the wheel turns, and Mr Big (Eamonn McManus) has indicated promotion within is the way forward.
What better man than Mick Potter to hone the abilities of a player like Gary Wheeler? Slick Mick tured Thomas Bosc into one of the best half backs in the league from an average full back/winger. He also has at his disposal the ever electric prospect of Kyle Eastmond. On top of that in the wings are players like Jonny Lomax and Jamie Ellis. When your circle of life is as promising and productive as that, who cares about the Hamburglar?
